I’m doing an online class this summer with fellow instructor and good friend Will Terry. We created The School of Visual Storytelling to teach, empower, and inspire visual storytellers.

We’re combining our powers to bring the aspiring professional illustrator current and timeless information about how to give your work and career an edge.

Our first class is Illustration for Storytellers with plans to expand to other topics like comics and storyboarding.

My Imaginary Friend

You guys know I have a bunch of kids right? (here’s two of the five) I do, and they go to the elementary school down the street. This school has a bunch of old PC’s that are crashing all the time, and because of budget cuts they can’t afford to replace them.

So, they’re holding a fund raiser to buy new Macs, and I’m doing my part by selling ART!

It’s simple: BUY ART = KIDS GET NEW COMPUTERS!!!

There’s two ways you can help:

Buy a print.

Bid on the original.

The auction closes in 5 days, and for the next week all prints sold will go to directly funding the new computer lab.

Also, if you buy a print or the original drawing you’ll also get an original hand drawn picture by one of my kids, plus a thank you note! (How cute is that?)

Super Hero Week continues!

I forgot I had the kids this morning, so today’s piece is from a few years back and it’s from one of my favorite books: INVINCIBLE!

I’m super excited to announce that the Antler Boy is now on Comixology! If you’re unfamiliar with Comixology, it’s like iTunes for comics. You can download and read all your favorite comics on any device. Your phone, tablet (both iOS and Android) and laptop are supported, and you can even read your comics in your browser.

Antler Boy is only $9.99 on Comixology that’s less than half the price of the print version! Plus you can read it in your bed at night with the lights off.

I love Comixology and have been using it for a better part of this last year. If you haven’t tried it out yet, sign up and download a comic or two (they have lots of free one’s as well) and see how you like it. These days I only have time to read comics as I lay down for bed, so having them on my iPad has been probably the the only reason I’ve still been able to read anything.

I chose to design a cheetah like feline that had evolved to run on it’s hind legs much like a raptor.

After I designed the outside appearance of the animal, I took it to Ms. Whitlatch to see if she could help me figure out how the leg and arm muscle structure would work. She did a simple drawover that showed me where the muscles attach and how they would flex or contract and using that information along with some cat reference I designed the skeleton and the muscle layer.

It was a great workshop and I’d recommend taking it from her if you have the chance.

Also, in doing a post class search for her art I came across this: Tales of Almathea.

It’s an online training course in creature design. By registering you get access to a free lecture which is amazingly thorough. The rest of the lectures look to be about $10 each. Pretty fair price for the information she’s giving. I’d recommend this as a great supplement for anyone studying to go into concept design.
