Mike Mignola Sketches

Mike Mignola is hands down one of my favorites.  And probably the most influential in how I construct a comic page.  As I was poring through my art file of Mignola drawings I’ve scavenged off the internet, I thought it would be cool to see what all of these little 5 second convention sketches look like together.  So I put them all on one page.  The characters span genres and publishers, yet to see them all drawn in his distinct style they  look as if they all cohesively live in the same universe.  Usagi’s my fave, next to Rocket Raccoon.  I have a thing for talking animals if you haven’t picked up on that yet.

  1. Mignola is a master of mood. Second only, I think, to Scienkwicz (sp). I love his pinups, covers and splashes, especially how unafraid of black he is. That being said, I cannot actually read HellBoy. For all his immense skills, his characters lack emotion and human vitality and I find that hard to connect with on the comic page.

To see how his style evolved, check out the back of Web of Spiderman Annual #2. He did a short dream sequence where Peter Parker is haunted by all of his demons.

  2. HI Pretty cool. there are 3 of my mignola sketches in there!

  3. Love these. Love the Rocketeer. Love the alien too. and wolverine and the cap. all pretty amazing.

Who are the three at the left, bottom row?

and who is under abe at top right?

  4. Very cool to see these Jake. I’ve seen most every hellboy & non-hellboy published piece he’s done…but these smaller, looser, more personal doodles are more elusive.
